LA REBECA SPACE is an independent and non-profit space founded by Michèle Faguet.

This is a two-way proposal project, on the one hand, it is meant to provide a space where local artists and their works can hold a dialogue going beyond social, fragmented and scattered boundaries which exist in our city. On the other hand, it is a place to invite foreign artists to stay in the city for a brief artistic production season, so as to set a kind of interaction among artists, who, though having diverse artistic backgrounds share similar conceptual interests. The international reach of the project would help, in this way, to enrich the local artistic scenery while easing the entrance of emerging local artists to the foreign artistic circuits.

The concerning discourse for the reception of artistic practices, on behalf of the periphery, tried to solve the discrepancies between the specificity of such practices and their relation with the opinions of the so-called “global”. Putting this dialectic game into practice ensures the automatic exclusion of the art, whose references prove irrelevant or simply non-understandable, in an international context or even still, which keep untouched a methodology which has become inapplicable due to the flow of information, characteristic of the very same global process. Consequently, this project expects to get rid of the easy polarity between the “local” and “global” when it recognizes that all conceptual work grants a diversity of individual but complex readings through its reference to a plurality of historical forms. In other words, although all cultural productions come up from a specific context, it does not have to limit itself to representing that context. Even when, the kind of proposal is local as it searches to refer to social and certain conditions of making art in Colombia, its international element tries to take Colombia out of its cultural isolation at a time when Bogotá becomes a feasible place to present contemporary artistic works produced in different parts of the world. A comprehensive part of the program will be, therefore, a series of talks with artists aimed to foster a lively debate over the work showed at the space.

The program for 2002-2003 consists of a balanced selection of artists and movie-makers, both emerging and established, local and foreign. In this event special attention to the presentation of Latin American artists was given, following up the logic of cultural, linguistic and geographical proximity that expects to avoid the axis that has located the art world center in certain American or European cities like New York, London and Berlin, thus interfering the exchange among the Latin American countries. Also, a key role was given to the works related to gender, due to the fact that we are still in a situation where-specially in the most traditional societies- the woman is assigned the spectator role more than the producer one.

To top it all, Space La Rebeca is an open and including space which will always be willing to receive project proposals of all the people interested in it.
