Workshop on Cultural Management Research for Artists II

Mauro Machado

Workshop EL LEVANTE.
Pichincha, Rosario, Argentina

DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES

In the last years, the creative young of Rosario tried to upgrade their education outside the city following up an individually drawn plan that is sometimes achieved in a disorderly and partial way and implies an emotional and economic cost, that for many, is restrictive.

To meet the high demand of young artists, of non and graduates from the arts school, “El Levante Workshop” was created, mainly, from an informative and exchange forum of their own production.

The purpose of the workshop, firstly is to set up a training space of great critical spirit and at the same time, to work as a link or exchange means among independent organizations of national and international artists, highlighting the transversal communication links, from province to province and from our country to the neighboring ones (Mercosur).

Secondly, we aspire to contribute with the broadening and consolidation of a more mature, dynamic and complex cultural atmosphere for Rosario and from here on, make a national contribution to the rest of the country. However, this objective goes beyond the workshop’s responsibility, it is of great concern to us to offer the artistic community a series of open activities.

Like first offers, a workshop has been organized which meets every fifteen days. For the first meeting of the month, a national artist is invited and for the second meeting, the local artists who are responsible for the continuous follow up of the workshop participants’ individual processes are present, to ease the meetings and exchanges among makers of different experiences and backgrounds and to give room to various voices and perspectives that would enable them to think of things from another point of view and expand the limits of the artistic field. Basically, we work out of the workshop members’ production. We embrace their production from very different points of view and approaches, analyzing their technical aspects, whether formal or conceptual, and we foster the relationships not only from and towards the artistic field but also from and towards other disciplines in order to perceive fairly direct connections and some other random ones thus, building up transversal or diagonal visions.

We also want to give room to life experiences and circumstances, emotional relationships and personal stories, very much convinced that we would rather show human characteristics than be labeled as objective or impervious to human desires and actions.

Attached to the previously mentioned working agenda, the “Centro Cultural Parque de España” is going to sponsor the visit of culturally and artistically related foreigners.
The activities are going to be held in the conference room of the Centro Cultural del Parque de España, located on the Parana river banks and at the “El Levante” workshop situated in Pichincha neighborhood, the ancient red zone of Rosario, whose symbolic rebirth stimulates the development and enforcement of cultural activities of different essence and history.

The secondly posed objective, of more immediate characteristic, will be made in terms of how the experience unfolds. Here is a list of the activities: the organization of some discussion sessions and seminars on education and artistic practice, the setting up of a “debate venue”, internet and work exchange, the establishment of a library network, an area of experiences, and so on.

It is our strongest desire that this program, through the exchange and proposed working plan, is built on an qualified alternative-driven space where the possibilities for our regional artists are multiplied and where the art problems under the social-political circumstances that characterize us are articulated.

Calendar 2004
An 8-month program has been thought. (April/November)
We will continue applying the same method we have so far implemented. Locally, we will receive the monthly visit of a national guest-artist pinpointing interdisciplinary character, as criteria when choosing the working agenda.
There will be a new call for artists, about 15, to make up a new group to start a new process and interact with the already existent group.
From this year’s experience we thought of creating the figure of “beholder” to enable the approach of a greater number of young artists of the milieu.
For these matters, and to provide an answer to the increasing need for exchange and communication; we believe, it will be necessary to enlarge our premises and funding sources
